More than just 4 walls

A day in my life at Basecamp Goettingen

I wake up at 7.00 and start preparing breakfast with my friends in the common kitchen. Around 9.00 I go out to the forest next to Basecamp for walking and come back and go to the gym. Around 3.30pm I go to one of the study rooms with my friends to study and sometimes we go to the cinema room afterwards for a good movie session. If we are not in the cinema room we go to the party room for having some fun. Around 10 pm Basecamp becomes a quite place and I go and sleep in my room.

FAQs

What is the contract length?
Basecamp contracts are offered for periods of up to six months. Staying longer is naturally possible. If you wish to enquire about it, please get in touch with the property’s local managers. Our team will be happy to help you with the necessary steps.
What documents do I need?
1. A copy of your passport (or local ID card for EU nationals) and
2. A university acceptance letter or copy of the student card if you are already studying.
When can I move in to Basecamp?
You may move in at any time during office hours after your contract start date. If you plan to arrive outside of office hours, please obtain confirmation from the managers. Detailed arrival information will also be provided one month before your tenancy begins.
What do I have to bring?
You need to supply your bedding and towels, cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery. Our team can help you look for the best deals and offer advice on where to find everything you might need. You can buy a bed set through Basecamp, contact the managers for more information.
What about noise?
All Basecampers are requested to be respectful of other Basecampers. Noise levels should be kept to a minimum during the hours posted at the property.
What is the process for moving out?
You may move out earlier but please note that you will be held responsible for full payment of the rent until the end of your contract. The deposit will be returned after your tenancy has ended and the rental payments or any damages for which you are responsible have been fully paid.

Gänseliesel

A fountain that stands in front of the mediaeval town hall in Göttingen, Gänseliesel is the city’s best known landmark. For some PHD students, it’s also an essential part of their graduation celebrations. Every student who completes their doctorate at the University of Göttingen has to climb the fountain and kiss the statue of the goose girl.

Old Botanical Garden of University of Göttingen

Created by Swiss anatomist and naturalist Albrecht von Haller in 1736 and maintained by the university. This botanical garden is one of Germany’s largest and most important scientific collections of plants, with more than 14,000 species across eight greenhouses and outdoor gardens.

Plesse Castle

Barely 10 minutes north of Göttingen cresting a hill over the village of Bovenden is a castle built in the 12th century as the seat of the Lords of Plesse. You can go on tours of the building, come up to admire the view, visit the restaurant, or catch a concert or play in summer.

Studentenkarzer

Behind the west wing of the University of Göttingen’s Aula building is one of the best-preserved student jails in the country. In use from 1837 through to 1933, it features charcoal and chalk messages and drawings on nearly every available surface, indicating that spending some time in the jail wasn’t something students were ashamed of.

Göttingen Collection of Mathematical Models

This started as a project by the University of Göttingen’s Felix Klein in 1780. His aim was to develop and preserve the school’s incredible collection of mathematical models that represent everything from algebraic curves to topology to probability theory. The collection is open to the public whenever the maths building is open.
